Kuntz aims to win European U21 Championship

New U21 head coach Stefan Kuntz has set his sights on winning the European U21 Championship in June 2017. “I want the players to know how it feels to win a championship,” the 53-year-old said at his introduction in Kassel.

Horst Hrubesch’s successor doesn’t believe that the Confederations Cup also taking place in 2017 will deplete his squad and therefore believes that it won’t decrease their chances of winning the Euros. Kuntz wholeheartedly trusts Joachim Löw and DFB director of football Hansi Flick. He said, “If we qualify, we will have a great squad.”

Flick confirmed this and he said, “The significance of winning a European Championship is high for us. Therefore we will field a team that is capable of winning the title.” He continued by saying, “We will coordinate everything carefully. We consider the European Championship to be the completion of their U21 careers.”

My oh my, what a quality team!

The match against Slovakia on Friday (18:15 CEST) in Kassel will be a warm-up for the players ahead of the European qualifier against Finland next Tuesday (18:00 CEST). The Germany U21 side have almost secured their places in the finals by winning 21 points from their seven matches. The new coach is aware of this. “My oh my, what a quality team!” he said in reference to his players, who he wanted to develop in the first place.

We don’t know if Kuntz will remain manager after the end of the European U21 Championship. “I don’t want to consider it as a test,” said Kuntz about his contract that runs out at the end of the European Championship. “This cycle will be over by then. But until then both sides know what they want from each other.”

Flick spoke on the fact that the most recent chairman of 1.FC Kaiserslautern has been accepted as a head coach by the DFB. He said, “For me it was important that he had the right background. He was an international footballer and he speaks the language of the players. He can lead a team and he has an enormous amount of experience behind him. Nowadays it’s no longer a one-man show.
