Kroos scores as Real close in on title

Daniel Sturridge got the Reds’ first goal in London after 35 minutes, while Brazilian Philippe Coutinho (57’, 62’) and Belgian Divock Origi (76’) built on the lead and secured the three points in the second half.

Germany World Cup winner and Champions League finalist Toni Kroos helped Real Madrid edge closer to a 33rd Spanish title. Kroos was on the scoresheet as Los Blancos beat Seville 4-1, while Marc-André ter Stegen was in goal for Barcelona as they beat Las Palmas by the same scoreline. Real and Barca are level on points going into the final week of the season, but Real still have one game in hand on their arch rivals which is on Wednesday evening against Celta Vigo (21:00 CEST).

Kroos scored in the 83rd minute to put Real 4-1 up after Cristiano Ronaldo had struck in the 78th minute and had also notched his 400th goal for Real Madrid in the 23rd minute. Ronaldo’s 400th goal for the Spanish giants came in his 391st game. Of those 400 strikes, 281 were scored in La Liga, 88 in the Champions League, 22 in the Copa del Rey, four in the Club World Cup, three in the Spanish Super Cup and two in the European Super Cup. Nacho (10’) also scored for Real and Stevan Jovetic (49‘) scored Seville’s only goal of the game.

If teams finish level on points at the end of the season in Spain, positions are decided on the head-to-head record between the sides. The two games between Barcelona and Real Madrid this season finished 1-1 and 3-2 to Barca.

Draxler scores in PSG win, but Monaco practically champions

World champion Julian Draxler and goalkeeper Kevin Trapp have missed out on their chance to win the league title in France with Paris Saint-Germain. Despite a 5-0 rout over AS Saint-Étienne on Matchday 37, the Ligue 1 winners from the past four years can only in theory catch AS Monaco. Edinson Cavani (2’, 72’) scored goals number 34 and 35 of the campaign, whilst Brazil’s Lucas Moura (38’,87’) and Draxler (90’) found the back of the net for the hosts as well.

Monaco have a three point lead ahead of the final game of the season along with a better goal difference by 17 goals. The Champions League semi-finalists won by a scoreline of 4-0 against OSC Lille, and in doing so practically secured the club’s first title since the year 2000. PSG still have a chance for silverware should they beat SCO Angers in the cup final on May 27th.

Juve denied title: Roma win

AS Roma successfully delayed an early celebration for Juventus, as the Turin side could have won the Serie A title with a result against the second placed capital city side. Germany international Antonio Rüdiger’s club came from behind to win Sunday’s game 3-1 in order to keep their slim hopes of snatching the Scudetto from Juventus’ hands alive. The Champions League finalists, who were missing world champion Sami Khedira due to injury, are four points ahead of Roma with two games to go. A win would have given the reigning champions their sixth title in a row and their 33rd overall.

Things seemed to be going well for Juventus, when Mario Lemina (21’) gave the guests the lead. Daniele De Rossi (25’), Stephan El Shaarawy (56’) and Radja Nainggolan (65’) turned the game around to hand Juventus their first league loss since mid-January.

Can and Liverpool up to third

Liverpool and Germany international Emre Can celebrated an important away win on the 37th matchday of the Premier League season. Jürgen Klopp’s men won 4-0 against West Ham United and have therefore overtaken Manchester City in third place. By finishing in the top three, they would automatically qualify for the Champions League. Despite having a point more than Pep Guardiola’s team, the Citizens have played a game less. The gap between Liverpool and fifth-placed Arsenal is four points.

Daniel Sturridge got the Reds’ first goal in London after 35 minutes, while Brazilian Philippe Coutinho (57’, 62’) and Belgian Divock Origi (76’) built on the lead and secured the three points in the second half.
