Kroos and Real guarantee their place in the UCL last 16

World Cup winner Toni Kroos and his Real Madrid teammates have confirmed themselves as one of the teams that will make up the Champions League last 16. The reigning champions were clear winners on Matchday 5, after beating APOEL Nicosia 6-0 to solidify their position in second place in Group H with 10 points. Group leaders Tottenham Hotspur are out in front on 13 points thanks to a 2-1 win against Borussia Dortmund away from home.

Kroos assisted Karim Benzema’s goal in the 39th minute, after Luka Modric opened the scoring in the 23rd. Kroos’ evening was done 30 minutes before the game’s conclusion, with the scores at 6-0.

Gündogan and City steal it late

Manchester City also confirmed their qualification for the last 16 after beating Feyenoord 1-0 at home. Raheem Sterling scored the winner in the 88th minute. Ilkay Gündogan put the ball on a plate for Sterling to bag the assist, while Leroy Sané was left out of Pep Guardiola’s squad. City cannot be caught at the top of Group F with 13 points, leaving Shakhtar Donetsk and Napoli to battle it out for second place.

Elsewhere, Liverpool threw away a three goal lead at half time in Sevilla, as the game ended in a 3-3 draw. Despite that, they still lead Group E on nine points. Emre Can was subbed on in the 63rd minute, while ex-Germany U21 international Loris Karius started in the Liverpool net.
