Kroos and Real extend advantage

Real Madrid have extended their lead at the top of the Primera Division thanks to their 2-0 victory over Elche. It was a tough first half for Real, who found the relegation candidates tough to break down. In the second half goals from Karim Benzema (56’) and Cristiano Ronaldo (69’) sealed victory. The three points, coupled with defeat for Barcelona on Saturday, means that Real are four points clear at the top of the table.

Sevilla’s final match ahead of the second leg of their Europa League last 32 second-leg against Borussia Mönchengladbach didn’t go to plan. They lost a seven goal thriller against David Moyes’ Real Sociedad side 4-3. Despite the defeat they remain fifth in the table.

Klose and Gomez feature

Lazio remain on course for a Champions League spot. Miroslav Klose’s side lie in fourth with 40 points. They beat Palermo to 2-1 yesterday. The visitors took the lead through Paulo Dybala (26‘) but Stefano Mauri levelled for Lazio soon after (33’). Antonio Candreva scored the winner in the 78th minute.

Juventus, who face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League this week, beat Atalanta 2-1 on Friday thanks to goals from Llorente and Andrea Pirlo. Mario Gomez was an unused substitute in Fiorentina’s 1-1 draw against Torino. Mohammed Salah looked to have won the game for Gomez’s side when he scored in the 85th minute but Giuseppe Vives levelled three minutes later. Fiorentina are fifth.

Can and Liverpool win

Germany U21 international Emre Can helped Liverpool to a 2-0 win over Southampton. Coutinho (3’) and Raheem Sterling (73’) scored for the Merseyside team. Liverpool are currently sixth in the table and are on course for a Europa League spot.
