Köln hoping to pull off a shock against Bayern

The best attack in the league will go up against the second worst in the game between FC Bayern München and 1. FC Köln on Friday evening (20:30 CET), which will kick off matchday 23 in the Bundesliga. The only question that remains is how many goals can Bayern score this time round.

They scored six goals last time out against Paderborn and scored eight the weekend before against Hamburger SV. But the Billy Goats have only scored three goals in their five games since the winter break. Nevertheless, Köln manager Peter Stöger insists his side aren’t beaten yet. “Our task is to make the game not fun for them. We have to play with a lot of effort and we’ll need Timo Horn to be in top form, just as he has been over the last few weeks,” he said.

Köln’s last win against the German record holders didn’t come all that long ago. It came back in 2011 when they won 3-2 at home. Peter Stöger’s side knows how you can score against Bayern. His team are very strong at the back: despite only scoring four goals so far since the winter break, they have only allowed the opposition to put the ball into the back of Germany Under-21 international Timo Horn’s net on two occasions so far in 2015.

Yannick Gerhardt misses out

“It’ll be a tough challenge. But we know what we need to do and we’ll try to cause a shock. We defend well and we want to show that,” said Köln defender Dominic Maroh. Bayern won the game between the two sides before the winter break 2-0 after a goal from Mario Götze and an own goal from Daniel Halfar.

Despite all the statistics that give 1. FC Köln some hope, the hosts will definitely be the clear favourites, especially as Köln will have to be without the ill Yannick Gerhardt. Bayern will be without long term injured Philipp Lahm (ankle fracture), Javi Martinez (cruciate knee ligament) and Thiago (medial collateral ligament), as well as Medhi Benatia due to a muscle problem.
