Knaak to captain women's U20s at La Manga tournament

With the World Cup in Papua New Guinea set for the end of the year (13th November until 3rd December), the women’s U20s are set to begin preparations in 2016 with a Six Nations Tournament in La Manga between 2nd and 6th March.

Germany coach Maren Meinert has called up 22 players for the trip to Spain, including Rebecca Knaak. The Bayer Leverkusen defender not only brings the experience of nine appearances for the U20s with her, but she is also someone that Silvia Neid has an eye on, having already been nominated for the senior team albeit without winning a cap.

England, Norway and Japan the opponents in La Manga

The most experienced player in the squad with 11 appearances is Rieke Dieckmann from SV Meppen. Six players are hoping to play for the U20s for the first time, while there are six others on stand-by.

There are a total of six nations taking part in the tournament on Spain’s Mediterranean coast. Meinert’s side will be taking on three of them, each sending out an U23s side. After arriving on 29th February, Germany will first take on England on 2nd March (13:00 CET), before meetings with Norway on 4th March (15:30 CET) and Japan on 6th March (18:00 CET). The other two countries in La Manga are the USA and Sweden.
