Kimmich hoping for a busy summer

Joshua Kimmich is not going to forget yesterday – 5th March 2016 – in a hurry. The youngster put in an excellent performance as Bayern München drew 0-0 in Dortmund and he was the centre of attention after the final whistle. Pep Guardiola raced over to the 21-year-old, who has been playing in defence in recent weeks, grabbed him around the throat and engaged in a passionate discussion with him. It was certainly one of the most intense tactical discussions that the Bundesliga has seen this season.

Guardiola was full of praise for Kimmich when he faced the press after the final whistle. “I love the guy. He has it all – he can do anything.” The assembled journalists then incurred his wrath: “Don’t ever say that he can’t play at the back again. He can defend successfully against any player on the planet.”

Kimmich: “It’s important to be told about your mistakes”

Sporting director Matthias Sammer expects Kimmich to have a busy summer: “There’s a good chance that he’ll be going to the European Championship of the Olympics – we’re fully aware of that.” Joachim Löw was at the game and is bound to have been impressed by what he saw. Kimmich touched the ball 121 times, completed 94% of his passes and won 64% of his challenges.

The player himself is a man of few words but admitted that “it’s important to be told about your mistakes. It’s important.” He has been a key feature in Horst Hrubesch’s DFB U21 side in recent years and was expected to be one of their key players at this summer’s Olympics in Rio, but there’s a chance that he could be linking up with the senior squad.

Guardiola: “He wants to learn and will continue to do so”

He received rave reviews after yesterday’s fixture, with the Süddeutsche Zeitung describing him as the “Player of the Evening,” with his crisp last-ditch tackle on Marco Reus catching the eye. The former VfB Stuttgart and RB Leipzig star is getting better all of the time and has shown that he deserves to be playing on the big stage.

He learns fast, which both Hrubesch and the Bayern boss can testify too, so if he receives a call-up to the senior squad, he is bound to give a good account of himself. “He wants to learn and will continue to do so,” explained Guardiola, whilst his opposite number Thomas Tuchel added that “he's a very good guy.”
