Kevin Volland returns to U-21 squad

DFB coach Horst Hrubesch has named his 23-man squad for both upcoming U-21 internationals. The two games, against the Faroe Islands in Tórshavn on Friday 6 September (from 20.45 CET) and against Ireland in Sligo on Monday 9 September (from 20.45 CET, live on Eurosport) – mark the start of qualification for Germany’s U-21 team for the 2015 UEFA European U-21 Championship in the Czech Republic.

One prominent player making a return to Hrubesch’s squad is Kevin Volland. The 1899 Hoffenheim striker already has ten caps and three goals to his name for the U-21s and was included in the squad for the U-21 European Championships in Israel last June, but missed the new U-21 team’s first international against France in Freiburg in August through injury. Speaking about his selection, Horst Hrubesch said: "The team put in a convincing performance in the 0-0 draw with France, so there was no need to make wholesale changes. I’m very pleased that Kevin is back with us. I would have loved to have had him in Freiburg as he gives us a genuine boost up front."

Hrubesch: "We’re aiming to win the group"

Both of Germany’s upcoming opponents have already played matches in Qualifying Group 6. Ireland beat the Faroe Islands 4-1 in August, whilst the Faroes lost 3-0 to Montenegro in June and drew 2-2 with Romania at home. Hrubesch was relaxed about the situation, saying, "Of course we’re latecomers, but we’re aiming to win the group. The task awaiting us in these two matches is an achievable one; we want to win both games."

The U-21s will contest their first home qualifiers in October, first by welcoming Montenegro to Wiesbaden (Friday 11 October) and then hosting the Faroe Islands in Kassel (Tuesday 15 October). In mid-November, Germany take to the road again for the return leg against Montenegro (Friday 15 November) and an encounter with Romania (Tuesday 19 November).

The ten group winners and four best runners-up will reach the play-offs to determine which seven teams will be joining hosts Czech Republic at the European Championship finals in June 2015, where a potential ticket to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio awaits.
