Julian Draxler: Two magic feet

Julian Draxler received a lot of praise from his teammates following his performance in Germany’s 3-0 victory over Slovakia. "Julian has two magic feet. We know that he can help us at any time," said fellow scorer Mario Gomez. Jérôme Boateng, who opened the scoring, said: "He livened up our game. That’s what we expect from our attacking players and we know that they can do it."

The manager’s assessment on the 23-year-old’s performance: "Julian did well. He repeatedly demonstrated the courage to enter into one-on-one situations. He worked hard and his movement was great. I was very pleased with him." The move also received the seal of approval from DFB President Reinhard Grindel: "The decision to start Julian Draxler was correct." Draxler himself remarked: "The manager encouraged me to get into one-on-one situations and put pressure on their players. I think I managed to do that quite well."

"A very nice day for myself and the team"

This deserved praise was confirmed by the World Champions’ statistics. Pass after pass after pass after pass, one-touch football – there was a lot of this in the German game and especially from Draxler. But he boasted so many more qualities over the 90 minutes and this was crucial in his outstanding performance. Draxler took risks and took on opponents – all with the ball at his feet. His mission was to not be without the ball and he accomplished this. When Draxler was in possession, he kept the ball at his feet for an average of 2.36 seconds – the highest value of all players by far.

Another top result – when in possession, Draxler had on average 3.51 touches of the ball. Draxler was courageous, Draxler challenged and overcame the opposition. Draxler had nine touches in the penalty area and registered three shots on goal. Of course, he also had a goal and an assist to his name. Not too shabby for 72 minutes of football.

"A very nice day for myself and the team," commented Draxler.
