Ireland and Germany draw 1-1 at Turner’s Cross

Germany's preparations for the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship started with a 1-1 draw against Irland on Tuesday. After leading thanks to a goal by Sandro Wagner after 22 minutes, Irish defender Michael Spillane found an equaliser four minutes later.

"I am not satisfied with the way we played", DFB-coach Horst Hrubesch said after the match: "We allowed too many chances, especially during the first half. But it was important to get some perceptions. There's a lot of work ahead."

The year’s highlight awaits the German U 21 in June, when the team faces Spain and England during the group at the European Championships in Sweden (June 15 – 29).
