Hummels scores in BVB victory

Borussia Dortmund kept up the pressure on table toppers FC Bayern München with a 4-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday afternoon. The Bavarians have already claimed the Christmas number one spot, but Thomas Tuchel’s men are breathing down their neck and the second half of the season promises to be an exciting affair.

The afternoon started badly for Dortmund, who fell behind after just six minutes. Last season’s Bundesliga top scorer Alex Meier fired home emphatically from the edge of the box after a penetrative counterattack. The hosts reacted well to the setback and they were rewarded for their tenacity after 24 minutes when the hugely impressive Henrikh Mkhitaryan tapped home to make it 1-1. They could have gone in front in first half injury time. Slobodan Medojevic fouled Gonzalo Castro in the box – he received his second yellow and was sent off. However, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed the resulting spot kick.

BVB were clinical after the break and deservedly wrapped up a comprehensive victory thanks to goals from Aubameyang, Mats Hummels and Adrian Ramos.

Dortmund remain second, five points behind Bayern. Frankfurt are now 15th.
