Hummels out for three weeks with ligament damage

A minor setback for World Cup winner Mats Hummels: The rock at the heart of the Dortmund defence strained a ligament in his right ankle in the 2-1 defeat to Bayern München. The diagnosis was revealed following an examination on Sunday morning.

Hummels should be back in action at the latest by 30th November in BVB’s away fixture with Eintracht Frankfurt. The Dortmund defender will be forced to sit out of the EURO 2016 qualifying game against Gibraltar in Nuremberg on 14th November, in addition to the friendly in Vigo against Spain four days later.

“He’s strained a ligament, which will mean that he will be back in three weeks,” said BVB chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke on German television. After Watzke’s verdict, Hummels will miss two Bundesliga matches – the clash against Borussia Mönchengladbach next Sunday and the match against SC Paderborn on 22th November. “It’s a lot better than we had previously feared,” said Watzke.

Hummels picked up the injury in the first half and was replaced by Neven Subotic during the break. “Mats limped towards me with a bandage around him in the dressing room. He said to me that he jumped high and had an enormous amount of pain after hitting the ground,” Klopp reported. Hummels himself feared that he had sustained a similar injury to his recent bone damage.
