Hummels leads BVB back to top spot

Borussia Dortmund have reclaimed their place at the top of the Bundesliga table from record champions FC Bayern München following a 3-1 victory over Hertha BSC on matchday 3. It was BVB’s eighth competitive win in as many games with Thomas Tuchel in the dugout. World Champion Mats Hummels scored the first-half opener, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Adrian Ramos were also on target after the break. Salomon Kalou netted Hertha's consolation goal.

Hummels scores from Kagawa cross

Hertha sat back inside their own half right from the start of the game, as 80,500 spectators saw Dortmund patiently mounting pressure on the visitors' defence. However, it was Hertha who had the first big chance to score following a counterattack, but Mats Hummels was able to deny Genki Haraguchi with a last-ditch tackle.

Dortmund's control paid off after 27 minutes, when Shinji Kagawa supplied skipper Hummels with a perfect cross and the Germany international's header found the back of the net to give the hosts the lead. BVB continued to create space in the final third, as Hertha's defence struggled to close down the gaps.

Aubameyang doubles BVB's lead

There were further chances in the second half as Dortmund upped the pace even more. Aubameyang doubled Dortmund's lead six minutes after the restart following an assist by Die Mannschaft’s Matthias Ginter, who once again put in a solid performance as BVB's right back.

Hertha looked content to keep the damage minimal as Dortmund's individual qualities were too much to handle. The hosts had a number of opportunities to add to their lead, but instead substitute Kalou pulled one back for Hertha. Former Hertha striker Adrian Ramos regained Dortmund's two-goal advantage with a strike in injury time, which ultimately secured the top spot in the table for Borussia.
