HSV send Wolfsburg into relegation play-off

Hamburger SV have yet again avoided relegation with a last-minute 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg, who now face a relegation play-off against the third placed side in the second division. Borussia Dortmund earned a 4-3 victory on Bundesliga matchday 34 over Werder Bremen, securing third place and the direct Champions League qualification, while TSG Hoffenheim were held to a 0-0 draw by FC Augsburg and thus finish in fourth place. 1. FC Köln return to the European stage for the first time in 25 years, as they end the season in fifth place following a 2-0 win over FSV Mainz 05.

Hertha BSC remained in sixth place to secure the Europa League play-off spot despite a 6-2 home defeat to Bayer 04 Leverkusen. SC Freiburg are seventh after a 4-1 defeat at champions FC Bayern München. Bundesliga runners-up RB Leipzig ended their season with a 2-2 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt, while relegated side FC Ingolstadt managed a 1-1 draw with FC Schalke 04. Bottom-side SV Darmstadt 98 also concluded the campaign with a 2-2 draw at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Wolfsburg took the lead in Hamburg after 23 minutes through Robin Knoche, but Filip Kostic levelled ten minutes later. With the hosts needing a victory to ensure their Bundesliga status, Hamburg pushed in the closing stages and youngster Gian-Luca Waldschmidt bagged the winner after 88 minutes.

Reus with brace in Dortmund comeback

Direct Champions League qualification was in danger for Dortmund, when visitors Werder took the lead seven minutes into the game through Zlatko Junuzovic, but Germany international Marco Reus and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang completed the comeback before the break. Werder however were level again just after the break from Fin Bartels strike. Midway through the second half the visitors took the lead after Max Kruse’s goal. Again it was Reus and Aubameyang to each score a penalty and turn the game around once more. Aubameyang also secured the golden boot with 31 goals ahead of FC Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski.

Hoffenheim were held to a goalless draw at home by FCA and thus missed out on claiming third place from Dortmund. TSG will have to qualify for next year’s Champions League campaign, while the draw was enough for Augsburg to avoid relegation.

Germany international Jonas Hector scored the opener against Mainz just before the break, sending the RheinEnergieStadion into a frenzy of celebrations. Yuya Osako secured Köln’s return to the European stage after a 25-year absence with the 2-0 just before the final whistle.

Frankfurt gathered some confidence ahead of their Cup final with BVB by earning a 2-2 draw at second placed side RB Leipzig. Goals from Marcel Sabitzer and Yussuf Poulsen gave Leipzig a lead, but Vallejo and Danny Blum scored late for Frankfurt to earn them a point.

Ingolstadt and Darmstadt earn draws in their final games

Bottom-side Darmstadt also exit the top flight coming off of a draw at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Thorgan Hazard and Raffael had given the Foals a lead, but Sven Schipplock and Marcel Heller levelled for the Lilies.
