HSV hoping to strengthen survival cause

There are two Bundesliga games on Sunday. In the early kick-off (15:30 CEST), FSV Mainz 05 host Hamburger SV. Both teams go into the game in good spirits, having won their last fixture. Mainz 05 beat Schalke 04 2-0 thanks to Stefan Bell’s brace; Pierre-Michel Lasogga’s brace helped HSV to victory over Augsburg.

It was a great result for Hamburg but they are under no illusions about their current situation. “It was a step in the right direct but we’re still struggling,” explained Heiko Westermann. “We’re not overstating our victory, there’s still a long way to go,” added Marcell Jansen. The game is important for both outfits. Mainz are all but assured of Bundesliga safety and now have one eye on a Europa League spot; HSV want to pick up more points in their quest for survival.

History is on HSV’s side. They have won seven of the last 17 meetings of the sides, losing only five times. However, they have won just one of their last 11 away matches (the 3-0 victory in Paderborn). Their last five games on the road have seen them concede 18 goals, scoring just once.

Will the unbeaten run continue?

Borussia Mönchengladbach are unbeaten in 10 league games and put that record on the line on Sunday when they travel to Berlin to face Hertha BSC. They are aiming to strengthen their grip on third place, whilst also putting pressure on Wolfsburg, who are currently second in the table.

Berlin isn’t a happy hunting ground for Borussia. Their only win in their last eight trips to the city came in November 2011, however, last weekend’s dramatic late victory over VfL Wolfsburg should see them go into the game full of confidence.

Hertha have improved in recent weeks and a victory over Gladbach should be enough to see them retain their Bundesliga status for another year. Pal Dardai will not be able to call upon Julian Schieber and Roy Beerens for the game. Hertha haven’t lost any of their last four home games; scoring four of their give goals in the second half. Dardai has a good record against Borussia: As a player he won seven of his eight meetings with them.
