HSV, Hertha, Gladbach and Frankfurt progress

The three Bundesliga sides in action tonight against lower-league opposition on Tuesday night all booked their places in the DFB Cup round of 16. HSV relieved the pressure with a convincing victory over Hallescher FC, Gladbach saw off VfB Stuttgart 2-0, while Hertha also won 2-0 away at St. Pauli.

There was to be no underdog story in Halle tonight, as despite the third-division side’s efforts, a superior Hamburg team prevailed comfortably. On the scoresheet for HSV today were Bobby Shou Wood with a brace, Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Gian-Luca Waldschmidt.

Wieser wins it for Berlin

In St. Pauli’s Millerntor, Hertha Berlin came out aggressively against the side bottom of the second Bundesliga and found themselves frustrated in front of goal for the most-part of the first half. Three minutes before the break, Salomon Kalou’s shot from 16 yards was blocked into the path of Germany U21 Mitchell Weiser who curled one into the far corner.

In the 54th minute, the young Weiser turned provider, taking on two opposition players and picking out Valentin Stocker, who nodded home for 2-0.

Gladbach get the job done

The game in BORUSSIA-PARK was not as comfortable for the Bundesliga and Champions League boys as the two goals and clean sheet may suggest. Gladbach spent much of the first half with their backs to the wall, defending against a determined looking Stuttgart side. The favourites needed a spark, which was provided by Fabian Johnson who put the Foals ahead with their first chance of the game.

Andre Hahn passed up a number of opportunities before Lars Stindl eventually put the game to bed with a contender for goal of the day. Lovely build up involving Hahn and Johnson rounded off with a peach of a finish.

Bundesliga clash goes all the way

Last to finish today were Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Ingolstadt. The only notable incident in normal time was the sending off of Marco Fabian. The ten men of Frankfurt held on and actually came closest to scoring in extra time as Seferovic headed onto the bar. In the inevitable shootout it was Frankfurt who held their nerves. Two Ingolstadt players skied their spot kicks and Hasebe slotted home the decider sending Eintracht through to the last 16.
