Hrubesch: Replacement not necessary

Horst Hrubesch won't be calling up a replacement for injured Olympic captain Leon Goretzka. The coach told the DFB on Sunday that he sees “no current need” for another player. The Germany squad for the remaining Olympic matches will remain at 17 players.

Hrubesch could have called-up any of Leonardo Bittencourt (1. FC Köln), Sebastian Kerk, Christian Günter (both SC Freiburg) or goalkeeper Eric Oelschlägel (SV Werder Bremen), who were all on Germany’s list of standby players.

Germany will face Nigeria in the semi-final of the Olympic football tournament on Wednesday (21:00 CEST). They will then either play in the final in Rio de Janeiro or the third-place play-off in Belo Horizonte on Saturday. Their opponents will be the hosts Brazil or Honduras, who will play each other on Wednesday in the other semi-final.
