Honorary membership for Joseph Blatter

The German football association DFB (Deutscher Fußball-Bund) has venerated FIFA-President Joseph S. Blatter as honorary member at the General Assembly in Essen. The two-day General Assembly, the 40th since reestablishment of the DFB, commenced with a ceremonial act attended by Blatter and German chancelor Dr. Angela Merkel on Thursday. Friday’s plenary session features the vote of 260 delegates on several key issues, including the DFB chairmanship, the budget for the next three years and a proposition on the realignment of the 4th division, the so-called "Regionalliga".

"Your attendance today is a tremendous honor for us", said DFB-President Dr. Theo Zwanziger, when he introduced Blatter to the audience in Essen’s Philharmonics. “We want to thank you for all you have done for German football throughout the years. We express our gratitude by making you an honorary member.”

“Today, I feel not only that people know me well here in Germany, but I’m aware of their sympathy and approval. Which feels good, especially today”, said Blatter, referring to the recent allegations of manipulation against two members of the FIFA Executive Committee.

Joseph S. Blatter succeeded Dr. Joao Havalange (Brasilien) on June 8, 1998, when he was elected as the 8th FIFA-President.
