Hertha BSC have done themselves a favour in the battle for the Champions League places as they beat 1. FC Köln 1-0 in the Bundesliga matchday 23 curtain raiser. Pal Dardai's team consolidated third place in the league behind Borussia Dortmund and Bayern München with the away win, with Vedad Ibisevic scoring the only goal of the game shortly before the break.
Now on 39 points, Hertha have extended the gap between themselves and challengers Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach (both on 35 points). Köln sit on 29 points without a single win in 2016 thus far.
Battle of the top defences
In front of 48,000 spectators, the two best defences in the league faced off against one another. The first real chance of the game fell to Salomon Kalou on 19 minutes and as the game went on, Berlin began to show the organisational ability that made them so strong in the first half of the season. They scored just before the break as Ibisevic provided the finish after good work from Kalou. They managed to hold on until the end and take three points from a very even game.
