Hertha and Ingolstadt hold their nerve

The two Bundesliga sides Hertha BSC and FC Ingolstadt have qualified for the second round of the DFB Cup after winning in penalty shootouts. After a hard-fought victory, 2. Bundesliga outfit FC Heidenheim have also progressed from the first round. Hertha came from behind to defeat 3. Liga outfit SSV Jahn Regensburg, whilst Ingolstadt also won against newly-promoted 2. Bundesliga team Erzgebirge Aue. Heidenheim had to come back from 2-1 down against Regionalliga side SG Wattenscheid 09.

Hertha were playing catch-up for the majority of the second half in Regensburg, after Alexander Nandzik gave the hosts the lead in the 51st minute, but Mitchell Weiser’s header just a few minutes before the end of the 90 made it 1-1 and took the game to extra time. The game remained level and a penalty shooutout followed. Marcel Hofrath missed Regensburg‘s fifth penalty and Salomon Kalou stepped up to score the decisive spot-kick for the team from the capital.

At the Erzgebirgestadion in Aue, the score remained level at 0-0 all the way until the end of 120 minutes. In the penalty shootout, Nicky Adler missed after 14 successful attempts and Tobias Levels scored to put FCI through to the next round.

Underdogs Wattenscheid shocked Heidenheim in the 30th minute, as Demir Tumbul headed home from a few yards out. However, John Verhoek equalised in the 75th minute with a real poacher’s goal and Denis Thomalla completed the comeback shortly after. Wattenscheid have fallen at the first hurdle in their last four DFB Cup appearances and the last time they made it to the second round was in the 1998/1999 season.
