Heintz: "The lads played well"

Heintz: I’d say so. Obviously we go into every game aiming to win it but sometimes it’s not as simple as that. I’m really happy with how we played. The head coach is happy with the performance too.

Question: What do you think the supporters will take from the game?

Heintz: They saw us put up a good performance against a top side. We tried to push them and put them under pressure. We gave a good account of ourselves – the only thing that we lacked was a goal.

Question: You’ve already mentioned their goal. Are you disappointed with the manner of it?

Heintz: I tracked Sebastian Rode’s run and he then played the ball off my foot. It unfortunately landed at the feet of Lewandowski, who buried it. Obviously I should have got more on the clearance, but to be fair, it came off my standing foot. It’s disappointing though, yes.

Dominique Heintz’s 1. FC Köln side lost 1-0 to record champions FC Bayern München on Saturday but gave a good account of themselves. They pushed the Bavarians throughout the game but were unable to grab an equaliser late on. The 22-year-old defender spoke to DFB.de after the defeat about performances, the Köln fans and Robert Lewandowski’s goal.

Question: Dominique Heintz, Bayern beat Köln but what did you make of your performance?

Dominique Heintz: I thought we played well. It took us a while to get into the game but you expect that against Bayern. I wouldn’t say we were the better side after the break, but I certainly think that we created the better chances and looked the most threatening. We made life very tough for them, so it’s disappointing that our efforts weren’t rewarded.

Question: They didn’t create too much...

Heintz: We were strong at the back. The lads played well and the supporters recognised that – they saw us fight for everything out there. It would have been nice to have taken a point from the match but unfortunately it wasn’t to be.

Question: Would things have been different if you pushed more before the break?

Heintz: We were pushing throughout the game. Bayern are a great side and are lethal. Robert Lewandowski didn’t really have a sniff of goal but he buried the half chance that fell his way. That’s the difference really – they were clinical. We shouldn’t be too disheartened though – we gave them a good game.

Question: Can you be satisfied with how things went, despite the result?

Heintz: I’d say so. Obviously we go into every game aiming to win it but sometimes it’s not as simple as that. I’m really happy with how we played. The head coach is happy with the performance too.
