Hamburg and Frankfurt pick up home victories

Matchday 14 of the 2014/15 Bundesliga season came to a close today. Games took place at both the Imtech Arena and the Commerzbank Arena and on both occasions the home sides won. Hamburger SV came out on top against 1. FSV Mainz 05, whilst Eintracht Frankfurt beat Werder Bremen.

Van der Vaart seals victory for HSV

Joe Zinnbauer’s Hamburger SV side moved out of the relegation zone and into 13th spot in the table thanks to today’s 2-1 win against Mainz. The game started off quietly and the first chance of note came in the 19th minute when Lasogga’s deflected free kick was tipped over. The hosts took the lead shortly after the half hour mark when Cléber fired home after some poor Mainz defending.

The hosts were buoyed by this and the passionate support of 45,968 spectators in the Imtech Arena and doubled their lead shortly after the break when Rafael Van der Vaart coolly converted a penalty. Shinji Okazaki’s 89th minute header ensured that the final minutes would be tense ones for the home supporters. Yunus Malli and Okazaki both came close to rescuing a point for Mainz in injury time, but the home side hung on to win. Kasper Hjulmand’s side drop to 11th as a result of the defeat.

Goals aplenty in Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt turned in a stellar performance to give Thomas Schaaf victory over his former side. The hosts won an enthralling game 5-2, but it could easily have been more as both sides hit the woodwork six times between them. A relatively quiet first half ended 1-1; Alexander Meier put the hosts in front in the 34th minute and Theodor Gebre Selassie equalised for Bremen on the stroke of half time.

The second half was spectacular and provided plenty of entertainment for the supporters Goals from Seferovic, Aigner and Meier put the hosts 4-1 in front, but Luca Caldirola’s 79th minute goal provided hope of a comeback. Those hopes were dashed seconds later when Marc Stendera’s stunning volley flew into the back of the net and sealed victory for Eintracht, who are now seventh in the table. Bremen find themselves back in the relegation zone.
