Gündogan optimistic after knee operation

Germany international Ilkay Gündogan is hoping to return to the training pitch at the start of next month, after a long spell out through injury. "I remain optimistic that I will be back on the pitch at the start of September. Then we need to take it session by session to see when I will make my first appearance for City", says the 25-year-old midfielder.

The former Dortmunder, who dislocated his knee in May and therefore missed the European Championship in France, is back in high spirits: "I am going along well. I didn’t go to China with the team, so that I could do daily rehabilitation and work towards my comeback". Being on the training pitch is “obviously more fun”, says the midfielder who has made 16 appearances for Germany, “but you have to be patient. Seeing improvements week by week is extremely motivating."
