Greek tragedy: German U 17 win tournament opener 4-1

Germany’s U 17 national team celebrates an impressive start into the second round of the qualifying for the European Championship. In front of a sold-out stadium in Spelle with 5000 enthusiastic fans, Germany beat Greece 4-1 (2-0).

Tony Kroos (Bayern München) scored the first goal after only two minutes, when Sascha Bigalke centered the ball and Kroos converted into the lower left corner. Kroos scored again in the 15th minute, when his free kick from 18 meters hit the target.

Elftherios Kanatas (64.) scored the 2-1 goal, but Germany’s youngsters did not lose confidence. Only three minutes later, Henning Sauerbier scored for the 3-1 German lead, followed by Richard Sukuta-Pasu’s goal (74), which made it 4-1 for Germany.

The German line-up:

Giefer - Untch (76., Maier), Texeira, Pachan, Rausch – Kroos, Funk, Wolze – Sauerbier, Bigalke (64. Sukuta-Pasu), Knoll (59. Dowidat).

German coach Paul Schomann said after the game: “We proved that we can play today. We should have scored more goals in the first half, so then we needed a bit of luck. If not for our keeper, Greece could have tied the game.”

Germany meets Scotland in Rheine on Friday (11 A.M.) and Ireland in Nordhorn on Monday (6 P.M.). Only the first-place finisher among the four teams will qualify for the European Championships in Belgium. [th]
