Goretzka fires Schalke to victory

Schalke 04 opened up matchday 27 with a 2-1 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach. Germany U21 skipper Leon Goretzka grabbed the winner with just seven minutes on the clock. The Royal Blues went in front thanks to a strange own goal from Martin Hinteregger (59’). Andreas Christensen (79’) grabbed an equaliser but it wasn’t enough in the end.

Gladbach boss André Schubert named the same started XI for the third game on the spin, but Schalke had to make changes. André Breitenreiter made five alterations to the side that lost in Berlin last weekend, with Junior Caicara, Dennis Aogo, Younes Belhanda, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Johannes Geis missed out. Leon Goretzka returned to the team and Leroy Sané was recalled.

Gladbach start strongly

The Foals dominated the early exchanges and could have taken the lead through either Raffael (9’) or Thorgan Hazard (15’) before the 20-minute mark. Schalke’s problematic start saw them change system. Goretzka, who had initially been playing in midfield, dropped back into defence to help make life harder for the visitors.

The Royal Blues didn’t create a chance until the 24th minute, when Sascha Riether’s cross caused havoc in the box but no one was able to finish the job off. Raffael’s 34th minute individual effort was the best chance of the half but S04 keeper Ralf Fährmann stood firm. He also kept out Lars Stindl’s powerful effort on the stroke of half time.

Goretzka’s winner comes late on

Borussia remained on top after the break, with both Raffael and Hazard carving out presentable opportunities; however, it was Schalke who opened the scoring. Leroy Sané’s blistering pace took him past Andreas Christensen and his cross landed in the back of the net after hitting Hinteregger, Nico Elvedi and the former once again.

Borussia didn’t let the setback affect them and Mahmoud Dahoud almost had them back on level terms immediately but his powerful drive rebounded off the bar to safety. Christensen swept home an equaliser with just over 10 to play but Goretzka’s effort from the edge of the box flew past Yann Sommer via a deflection to settle the game.
