Goretzka and Philipp won't feature for the U21s

Leon Goretzka of Schalke 04 and Maximilian Philipp of SC Freiburg won’t meet up with their Germany U21 international teammates due to injury and illness. Goretzka strained his thigh this weekend in his side’s Bundesliga clash with Borussia Mönchengladbach so will stay in Gelsenkirchen to recover, while Maximilian Philipp had to cancel his trip to the U21s’ training camp due to a bad cold. The coaching staff are yet to decide if they should call up Stefan Kuntz as a replacement.

The U21 side will face Russia this Friday (18:00 CEST) in Ingolstadt, with the side then travelling to St. Pölten to play Austria away on Tuesday 11th October (18:00 CEST). Until now, the U21 team can look back on a perfect record in their qualification campaign for EURO 2017, in which they have played eight and won eight, scoring 27 and conceding just four goals. The Germany team will secure their qualification for EURO 2017 as group winners, with a win against Russia on Friday.
