Goretzka and Höwedes lead Schalke to victory against Salzburg

Leon Goretzka and Benedikt Höwedes both scored in Schalke’s 3-1 win over Red Bull Salzburg in the Europa League to end their bad run of form. Markus Weinzierl’s team have lost all of their five Bundesliga matches so far but tonight they celebrated their second win in the Europa League. This will give them a bit of confidence for Sunday’s match against Borussia Mönchengladbach (17:30 CEST).

Goretzka, who won an Olympic silver medal with Germany in Rio, put Schalke in the lead in the 15th minute. Schalke then went 2-0 up after Salzburg player Duje Caleta-Car put the ball in his own net from Höwedes’ ball into the area in the 47th minute. Then captain Höwedes celebrated scoring his own goal after he put the ball into the net with a scissor-kick. Salzburg got one a goal back a bit too late through Jonatan Soriano in the 72nd minute.
