Good 1-0 win over South Korea ahead of home EUROs

The Germany U19s have won their second friendly within the space of four days against South Korea and look good going into the EUROs on home soil. In the final match before the tournament in Baden-Württemberg (11th-24th July), Guido Streichsbier’s side beat their Asian visitors 1-0 in Worms. Germany had previously beaten their opponents 2-1 on Saturday.

In a match with many chances, it took Marvin Mehlem until the 74th minute to find the back of the goal with a strike from the edge of the box to win it for his team. Germany had put in a good performance but were twice denied by the post.

“We are pleased – we have won twice against an opponent who were as strong as we had hoped. Even the way we played pleased me. We tried a few new things in terms of tactics and we now have a good perception of the boys going into the EUROs,” said Streichsbier. “A match against a deep-lying opponent was a good test for the tournament. If we were lacking anything then it was our chance conversion.”

U19s unlucky at first but dominate

In front of 1856 spectators, Streichsbier’s side got off to a good start in bright sunshine and created numerous chances, but without success. Germany were causing the South Koreans problems down the left flank from early on and it took some time for the visitors to find their feet in the game, but they rarely threatened. The young Germany players asserted their control before half time and Philipp Ochs came close to putting his side ahead on a few occasions, but the 16-yard strike from the Hoffenheim player hit the post and he brought two good saves out of Korean keeper Song Bumkeun.

The second half began with six changes, but Germany remained without reward for their passionate start. One shot from Max Besuchkow was blocked and another one went just over the bar on the hour mark. Substitute Fabian Reese went even closer, but his shot struck the post just like Ochs in the first half. Mehlem saw to a happy ending for Germany in the 74th minute following good play from Tsiy-Willian Ndenge.

The squad will meet in late July for a training camp shortly before the start of the EUROs. The draw for the groups will take place on 12th April at Stuttgart’s Mercedes-Benz-Arena.
