Gomez scores for Besiktas in derby win against Podolski's Galatasaray

In the battle of Istanbul, between two Germany internationals, Mario Gomez and his Besiktas side emerged on top. Gomez scored his eleventh goal of the season a 2-1 win over local rivals Galatasaray, who feature World Cup winner Lukas Podolski, to retain top spot in the Süper Lig after matchday 15.

The former Bayern and Fiorentina striker cancelled out Wesley Sneijder's opener on 54 minutes, before ex-Hamburg player Gökhan Töre grabbed the winner in front of the home fans.

Besiktas, on 35 points, remain one point ahead of fellow Istanbul club Fenerbahce. Defending champions Galatasaray are nine points behind in fourth place after their third defeat of the season.

Italy: Klose and Lazio miss out on win

There's no way out of the crisis for World Cup winner Miroslav Klose and his Lazio side. The boys from the capital are now seven games without a win in the Serie A following their 1-1 draw with Sampdoria, which concluded matchday 16 on Monday evening.

Former international striker Alessandro Matri came on for Klose and put his side into a 78th-minute lead, but Sampdoria's Ervin Zukanovic equalised in second-half injury time. Klose, now 37 years of age, has failed to score in any of his eleven competitive appearances this season.

With 20 points on the board, Lazio remain in twelfth place, nine points behind the Europa League places and six points above the relegation zone. The point against Sampdoria will do little to ease the tension in Rome, with fans last week dumping bags of animal excrement at the training ground and displaying banners demanding the resignation of Claudio Lotito.
