Gomez fires Wolfsburg to key victory

Relegation candidates VfL Wolfsburg secured a vital 2-0 victory over DFB-Pokal finalists Eintracht Frankfurt on Bundesliga matchday 32. Borussia Dortmund took a big step towards direct Champions League qualification with a 2-1 win against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. SV Darmstadt on the other hand have been relegated following a 1-0 loss at FC Bayern München. FC Augsburg were held to a 1-1 draw by Borussia Mönchengladbach, while Ingolstadt edged closer to the relegation play-off spot thanks to a 1-1 draw against Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Wolfsburg could rely on striker Mario Gomez to lead them to victory in Frankfurt. The Germany international assisted Daniel Didavi’s opener at the start of the second half before he adding his own name to the scoresheet shortly after the hour mark. Wolfsburg now have a three point cushion over 16th place, while Frankfurt are four points adrift the Europa League spots.

Dortmund got off to a flying start and took the lead against Hoffenheim just four minutes into the game, when Germany international Marco Reus slotted home. Dortmund’s top goalscorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doubled the hosts’ lead in the closing stages of the game, before Andrej Kramaric pulled one back from the spot.

Augsburg and Ingolstadt miss out on three points

Darmstadt needed a victory over champions FC Bayern in order to maintain their Bundesliga status, but Juan Bernat’s first half strike was enough to separate the two sides as Darmstadt becomes the first team relegated this campaign. With four minutes left to play, Halil Altintop saw his penalty saved by Bayern’s third-choice keeper Tom Starke.

It was Augsburg who invested more to the cause in Mönchengladbach and were duly rewarded in the second half when Alfred Finnbogason handed them the 1-0 lead. However, Gladbach grabbed an injury-time equaliser from André Hahn as Augsburg remain in relegation danger.

The game between Ingolstadt and Leverkusen also failed to produce a winner. The hosts took the lead from Sonny Kittel after 74 minutes, but Germany youth international Kai Havertz levelled just four minutes later to provide Leverkusen with a crucial point.
