Besiktas have Mario Gómez to thank for their return to the top of Turkey's Super Lig, after he scored the winner in their 1-0 home win over Genclerbirligi, to end matchday 22. The Germany international showed once again that he is in good form, with a goal in the 64th minute, his 16th of the season, to give the club from the capital their 16th win of the season. Former Bayern Munich player Jose Sosa gave the assist for Gómez’s goal.
Besiktas dominated the game and deserved to go ahead. As well as Gómez, Andreas Beck also started the game. The former Germany international has played the full 90 minutes in every game for Besiktas so far this season. Gomez was substituted in the 77th minute.
Besiktas now have 51 points and are one point ahead of Fenerbahce in second place, although they also have a game in hand over their rivals. Lukas Podolski’s Galatasaray are in third place, after beating Trabzonspor 2-1 on Sunday. However, they are 14 points off league leaders Besiktas.
Manchester United though to the next round of the FA Cup
Bastian Schweinsteiger’s Manchester United moved through to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup with a 3-0 win over Shrewsbury Town. Although the Germany international wasn’t in the squad, as he is still recovering from injury. Manchester United will face West Ham in the quarterfinals on 21st March.
