Gomez and Besiktas go top

Germany international Mario Gomez and Besiktas remain strong contenders in Turkey’s Süper Lig title race. The 30-year-old and his club secured a 2-1 victory at Rizespor on matchday 25 to claim top spot in the league, at least for now. Local rivals Fenerbahce will overtake them with a win against Kayserispor on Sunday (kick-off: 18:00 CET).

José Sosa and Kerim Frei bagged first-half goals for Besiktas, who also still have a game in hand. Gomez, on 18 league goals this season, was brought off after 83 minutes and watched Teddy Chevalier grab a late consolation goal for the visitors.

Barca on course for title

FC Barcelona and Marc-André ter Stegen continue their charge towards a 24th league title. The table toppers cruised to a 6-0 victory over relegation candidates FC Getafe on matchday 29.

Juan Rodríguez scored an own goal after eight minutes to put Barca ahead. Goals from Munir, Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, Arde Turan and a brace by Brazilian superstar Neymar saw last season’s Champions League winners claim a fully deserved win. Messi also missed a penalty after eleven minutes.
