Goal scorer Gier: “That was the first step”

The U20s Women were able to celebrate a successful start to their World Cup, as they triumphed 3-1 over Venezuela in Papua New Guinea’s capital city, Port Moseby. Coach Maren Meinert’s side are now on the right path to qualify for the quarter final, after earning their first three points with convincing performance. DFB.de has put together the match reaction.

Maren Meinert: As expected, it was a hard game. We've gotten off to a dream start but we could have done a bit more. After conceding the equaliser the team reacted well - you have to do that. I’m very happy with our start and team performance.

Rebecca Knaak (captain): We consolidated our good start with the early goal - that did us good. After, we let Venezuela into the game unfortunately as they equalised, but then we started to play well again. We’re happy with out performance. The game against Mexico will certainly be hard-fought and in no way easy. We’ll first recover, then do everything to prepare well for the next game.”

Madeline Gier: We fought ourselves into the game and in the end were rewarded for our efforts. Of course there are always things you can improve but overall we performed well. I'm happy with the goal and the “Player of the Match” award, but the team’s success is of course the most important thing. We’ve now taken the first step but we’ll have to make sure we also perform well against Mexico.”

Anna Gerhardt: The first goal was good for us, we found our way into the game well. However, we weren’t able to let up for a minute because Venezuela didn’t make it easy for us. We’re very happy to get our first important points, now we’ll recover and concentrate on the next match.

Carina Schlüter: It was hard to prepare for Venezuela beforehand as we hadn’t faced them yet and there wasn’t much video material. Today, we did well as we piled on the pressure early, fought and stuck together as a team.
