Germany Women fired up for revenge against USA

For the last DFB Women’s victory over the USA, you would have to go back 13 years; the most recent defeat was a painful one. As the final game of the SheBelieves Cup draws nearer, the Germany women’s team could hardly be more motivated. "We will give absolutely everything and see to that we win this game," said Josephine Henning ahead of the clash with arch-rivals USA on Wednesday (CET: Thursday 1:45 am) in Boca Raton, Florida. The 2-0 semi-final defeat last summer in Montréal is still fresh in the minds of the DFB Women - Tabea Kemme therefore promises a performance "full of passion and full of desire."

In order to win the prestigious four-nation tournament, Germany only need a draw.

On the other side of the country, former Germany Women’s international Nadine Angerer is equally excited. "On we go! None other than the USA awaits us. It’s about time," were the words of the 37-year-old on Twitter. Nadine Angerer has recently signed as goalkeeper coach for US professional football club Portland Thorns.

Confident after two wins

Confidence levels in the Germany camp have risen significantly following narrow victories in the opening two games of the Olympic year against France (1-0) and third-placed team at the World Cup England (2-1). The World Cup winners have also failed to win convincingly in the first ever SheBelieves Cup. The US-girls, who are currently struggling following the loss of a couple of crucial players through retirement since the World Cup, beat both England and France 1-0.

"It is important for us to end the tournament on a high," said midfielder Sara Däbritz. The 21-year-old is key to Silvia Neid team’s hunt for medals in Rio (3rd – 19th August). Unfortunately, due to having picked up two yellow cards, she will have to watch on from the stands. This has taken nothing away from her excitement ahead of the game in the FAU stadium in front of more than 20,000 passionate spectators. "It spurs us on, especially knowing that the whole stadium is against us," said Däbritz.

Late birthday present for Goeßling?

Kathrin Hendrich will also be missing the big SheBelieves Cup decider. Due to an upcoming exam, the Champions League-winning defender from 1. FFC Frankfurt boarded a flight back to Germany on Monday.

Lena Goeßling already had cause for celebration, even before the game against the four-time Olympic winners. The midfielder celebrated her 30th birthday on Tuesday - a win against the bogey team would be the perfect late birthday present.
