Germany U17s pick up a point against Canada

The Germany under 17 women’s team picked up a point against Canada, in their second World Cup group game in Jordan. Anouschka Bernhard’s side followed their first group win over Venezuela with a 1-1 draw against the North Americans.

The result means that the Germany team go into Friday’s game against Cameroon with a good chance of qualifying for the quarter final. The group winners and the runners-up progress through to the knockout stages.

A goal from Canada A player and Olympic bronze medal winner Deanne Rose (20’) put the Canadians into the lead. Giulia Gwinn then equalised for Germany on the stroke of half-time (45+2’), as the Germans began to assert themselves in the game. After the break, Germany went in search of a winner, but Bernhard’s side couldn’t make their efforts in the final third count.

Gwinn scores free-kick

After a cautious start to the game, Klara Bühl had the first chance. The Freiburg-born Bühl initially had a shot from inside the box saved by Canada’s keeper Lysianne Proulx and then shortly after, had a shot from distance which went just wide of the Canadian’s goal. Then came the opening goal of the game, as Canada overcame the early pressure from Germany through Rose’s goal. The Canada A team player took advantage of an error in the Germany defence to put her side in the lead.

The Germans then set about finding an equaliser and took increasing control of the game. Gwinn missed a good chance in the 35th minute, with Tanja Pawollek then heading just wide minutes later. Joy then broke out on the Germany bench, as Gwinn hit a powerful free-kick into the corner from just outside the 18 yard box.

After the break, Bernhard’s pushed hard for a second goal, but couldn’t quite manage it. Verena Wieder’s chipped cross hit the bar in the 49th minute, with Caroline Siems having a shot from distance in the 53rd minute. The goalscorer Gwinn then missed two opportunities minutes later (56’, 59’). Sydney Lohmann’s shot (63’) was also off target. The impressive Gwinn (89’) and again Lohmann (90+1’) missed the last good chances Germany had, to find a winner. The women’s side’s superiority in the second-half could have easily led to a Germany win.
