Germany lose to Italy 1-0, drop to 8th place

Without the support of six banged-up starters, Germany’s women lost 1-0 against Italy on Wednesday and finish in 8th place at the Algarve Cup, a disappointing result for the reigning World Champions. Germany has lost three of their four games during the competition in the South of Portugal.

Coach Silvia Neid had to replace Linda Bresonik because of a torn muscle, while both Bianca Rech and Navina Omilade had suffered sprained thighs. Minor injuries forced Sandra Smisek, Britta Carlson and Ariane Hingst to rest.

Despite the depleted line-up, Germany took the initiative from the opening whistle. Melanie Behringer (8.) and Kerstin Stegmann (16.) both failed to score with their shots from outside the penalty box.

With the second half beginning, Germany increased the pressure, but once again failed to score the important 1-0. Behringer (52,. 71.), Birgit Prinz (56., 79.) Anja Mittag (58.) and Celia Okoyino da Mbabi (69.) wasted golden opportunities. Like a bolt out of the blue, Italy scored when Silvia Fuselli (81.) converted a free kick. [th]
