Germany futsal team lose first competitive fixture

The Germany national futsal team lost their first competitive international fixture 5-3 to Armenia in their first ever European Championship qualifying fixture. Germany will their other group opponents Latvia on Friday at 18:30 CET, before facing Estonia on Sunday at 13:00 CET. Only the winner of the group can progress to the second round.

We had the chance to win, however we can’t complain about losing because we didn’t do thing properly,” said captain Timo Heinze. “We lost because we didn’t make the most of our chances. It’s frustrating how the game turned out. Latvia are an even stronger side, but we will prepare well for the game. We haven’t lost out on qualification yet.

Germany score twice in 13 seconds

Germany got off to the better start, attacking quickly on the counter as soon as they had won the ball to create problems for Armenia. Timo di Giorgio scored the opener for Germany in the 5th minute, the first ever goal scored by a Germany futsal team in a competitive fixture.

Armenia reacted quickly. Heinze had to clear the ball off the line to stop Armenia from scoring, however just seconds later Andranik Karapetyan put the ball in the net to bring the scores level. Seconds later again, Garegin Mashumyan put Armenia in front. Germany took control of the game again and Stefan Winkel made it 2-2 after a fantastic one-two with Michael Meyer. 13 seconds later, Heinze scored to put Germany in front, however they couldn’t hold onto the lead for long and Garegin Mashumyan brought the scores level again just before half-time.

Armenia score again

Germany had more possession in the second half and were looking to find a winner. It was Armenia that found the net however, as Saro Galstyan gave Pavols Wiegels no chance with his shot to make it 4-3. Then Sargis Nasibyan extended Armenia's lead to 5-3 just two seconds before full-time.
