Germany draw with England in SheBelieves Cup

Jones brought Lina Magull and Anna Blässe into the game to replace Kayikci and Linda Dallmann to begin the second half, which reaped immediate rewards. Firstly, Däbritz beat England goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain to a loose ball in the box, but her resulting shot proceeded to be blocked. The next shot from Magull struck Chamberlain, who was running back to take up her position in goal, before rebounding back into the goal off the foot of Millie Bright.

The second England equaliser of the game came from nothing. White ran on to a long ball behind the German defence and left Schult no chance with the resulting one-on-one.

The SheBelieves cup has served as an intensive bit of preparation for the critical upcoming phase of World Cup qualification, namely games against the Czech Republic and Slovenia on 7th and 10th April respectively. After four games, Germany leads Group 5 with nine points.

The Germany Women’s National Team are still waiting for their first win of 2018. In their second SheBelieves Cup game, the Olympic champions drew 2-2 with England after losing their opener to tournament hosts USA 1-0.

Hasret Kayikci scored the game’s opener for Steffi Jones’s team in the 17th minute, before Ellen White fired right back for the Lionesses a minute later. A Millie Bright own goal renewed the Germany lead in the 52nd minute, but White would score again in the 73rd to end the game at 2-2.

Fourth draw in 25 games against England

After the other two sides in the tournament, USA and France, drew their game 1-1, both France and Germany have one point to their name, while England are ahead of the USA on goal difference with both sides on four points apiece. Germany will play their last game in the tournament on Wednesday against France.

Jones made two changes to the side that she named for the game against the USA. Lena Goeßling replaced Babett Peter in central defence, who is injured and has travelled back home, while Hasret Kayicki got her chance to start up front.

The changes paid off from the outset. Kayicki had her first dangerous shot on goal in the seventh minute, while Lena Goeßling and Kathrin Hendrich were standing tall in defence. In the seventeenth minute, the breakthrough came. Sara Däbritz took a shot on goal that forced the England goalkeeper to rebound it into the path of Kayicki, who slotted home for the 1-0 lead.

Straight after, however, the Lionesses capitalised on a bit of luck to draw themselves back level. Ellen White took a shot from distance towards the German goal, which was deflected and sailed past a wrong footed Almuth Schult. After that, England grew into the game and had the better chances through Toni Duggan (24’), Demi Stokes (34’) and Fara Williams (39’). It was the high pressing of the English side that caused trouble for Germany. A header by Svenja Huth remained the only notable Germany chance of the remainder of the first half (29’).
