Germany celebrated 8-0 victory against China at the Olympics

World champions Germany thrashed China 8-0 to open their campaign for Olympic women's football gold in devastating fashion Wednesday.

Inspired by a four-goal performance from women's international footballer of the year Birgit Prinz, Germany showed they have the class to add the Olympic title to their world title won last year.

Prinz fired Germany into the lead after 13 minutes of the Group F match in Patras played in fierce heat. With her second goal in minute 21 Prince opened the way to the victory, which was made safe by Pia Wunderlich with a shot from the edge of the area on 65 minutes to shatter the feeble Chinese resistance. Prinz completed her hat-trick to make it 4-0 as the floodgates opened. Renate Lingor made it five from the penalty spot before Conny Pohlers, Prinz with her fourth and Martina Mueller completed the rout.
