Germany beat Wales in an EC qualifier

Germany's Women's National Team beat Wales on Thursday in a European Championship qualifier 4-0 (3-0). In Kassel's Auestadion Ariane Hingst (9.), Conny Pohlers (13.), Annike Krahn (30.) and Melanie Behringer (77.) scored for the German side, which is qualified for next year's EC in Finland.

Silke Rottenberg from newly crowned UEFA Women's Cup winners 1. FFC Frankfurt played her 126th and last match before retiring from the international stage. This also means that the 36-year-old will not be part of Germany's squad for the upcoming Olympic football tournament 2008 in Beijing. Rottenberg, a three time European champion will still continue to play for her club outfit from Frankfurt until 2009.

Coach Silvia Neid had named a squad of 18 players to face Wales in their seventh qualifier - their fourth and last played at home. The match against Wales was also a test for the Olympics, starting on 6th of August. "I want to see some players", said Neid, who is only allowed to name 18 players for the tournament in China.

Hoping for her first appearance is 18 year old Kim Kulig from VfL Sindelfingen. On the other hand, one of the outstanding goalkeepers in the history of the women’s game ends her international career. 15 years after her debut, Germany’s goalkeeper Silke Rottenberg will play her final game for the national team.

Germany's last European Championship qualifier will be played on the second of october in Switzerland.
