Germany beat Sweden and play for third place

Germany won their third and last group match at the Algarve Cup in Portugal against Sweden 2-0 (1-0). Thus, the German women moved into the "small final" and play for third place against Norway on Wednesday.

In Santo Antonio, Sandra Smisek broke the tie in the 25th minute. The striker scored after a Birgit Prinz pass. Only ten minutes later, Kerstin Stegemann missed with a volley kick.

In the second half, both teams played more aggressively. Consequently, Charlotte Rohlin (48th) with a header for Sweden and German Renate Lingor (50th) from the distance as well as Melanie Behringer (66th) had good chances to score.

Rottenberg injured and substituted

German coach Silvia Neid had to substitute for the first time in the 74th minute, when goalkeeper Silke Rottenberg had to leave the pitch after a collision and was replaced by Nadine Angerer.

After Petra Wimbersky was fouled in the penalty area by Swedish goalkeeper Kristin Hammarström, Birgit Prinz (86th) scored from the penalty spot.

Prior to the tournament in the south of Portugal, German coach Silvia Neid had announced that she would use the Algarve Cup as a try-out-phase for this summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing.
