Germany back on track after 3-0 win over Denmark

In the final game of the group phase at the Algarve Cup the German national team beat Denmark 3-0 (2-0) on Monday. Anja Mittag (Turbine Potsdam) after 16 minutes, Danish keeper Tine Cederkvist (44., owngoal) and Manuela Behringer (48.) scored the three German goals. It was the first German victory at the Algarve Cup. "I am very happy that we won this match. The first goal was very important", German teammanager Silvia Neid said.

On Wednesday (11.30 a.m.) Germany will play against Italy in the match for 7th place.

Germany lost the second match at the Algarve Cup 0-1 to France in Faro on Friday and have no chance to defend the title. In the Cup’s opening game the German women suffered a 1-2 against Norway on Wednesday.

The best teams in international women’s football once again compete in the South of Portugal. The tournament is aptly named "Mundalito" – little World Cup. German Coach Silvia Neid appreciates the difficulty of the task, as the 42-year old German head coach needs to prepare her team for this year’s FIFA World Cup (September 10-30 in China).

Last year, Germany had beaten the United States 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out. The final of the 2007 Algarve Cup in the Estadio Municipal in Vila Real de San Antonio is scheduled for March 14 (kickoff 5.30 P.M., live on Eurosport). But while repeating last year’s success had been definetely ranked highly on Silvia Neid’s priority list, the German coach looks at the bigger picture as well. "Players should use this opportunity to make an impression. This is the time to qualify for our World Cup squad. Especially physically, I expect them to be in great shape."
