German women bounce back against Finland

The German women bounce back from their opening defeat at the Algarve Cup and beat Finland 3-0 (3-0). Silvia Neid made major changes, inserting six new players following a 1-0 loss to Denmark on Wednesday. Prior to the tournament in the south of Portugal, the German coach had announced that she would use the Algarve Cup as a try-out-phase for this summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing.

For the game against Finland, Nadine Angerer - one of the heroines of the past World Cup - returned to guard the goal. While Annike Krahn, Jennifer Zietz, Martina Müller, Simone Laudehr and Conny Pohlers took a seat on the bench, Navina Omilade, Saskia Bartusiak, Isabell Bachor, Lena Goeßling and Melanie Behringer were added to the starting line-up.

At Estadio Algarve in Faro, the DFB-team took the initiative from the very beginning. Birgit Prinz and Melanie Behringer both missed the goal only by inches, but then Prinz, the three-time FIFA World Player of the Year, scored on a beautiful volley (17.). When Kerstin Steegeman centered the ball a little later, it was Prinz again, who converted for a goal (28.). It was her 119th goal in an international match. When Finland fouled Prinz in the penalty-area, Renate Lingor executed the spot kick (37.) to give the reigning World Champions a 3-0-lead.

Finland found their rhythm in the second half, but could not narrow the score, which would have been 4-0, if Conny Pohlers had not missed on a golden opportunity (76.). Debutant Nicole Banecki from FC Bayern München entered the game for Behringer in the final minutes.
