German Under 21 draws 2-2 with the Republic of Ireland
The German Under 21-National Team has drawn 2-2 (1-1) in Fürth against the Republic of Ireland in its last test for the EC-qualification beginning in September.
The team of DFB-Coach Dieter Eilts took command from the kick-off and was rewarded the first goal in the 18th minute, when Osnabrück-striker Rouwen Hennings tipped in a loose ball after a shot by Dennis Aogo (SC Freiburg).
But 30 minutes into the match, the Irish grew stronger, taking profit from easy faults of the German defense. While goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was able to stop efforts by James O'Brien (31st) and Adam Rooney (34th), he was left to watch Stephen Gleeson scoring the equaliser six minutes from halftime (39th).
In the second half it was the same picture at first: Germany pressuring, but Ireland defending well. In the 64th minute the guests played out a counter-attack perfectly with Gleeson scoring his second of the night. But the German team held on and was recompensed with a late equaliser by Andreas Beck (VfB Stuttgart) in the 84th minute.
