Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder celebrated 75th birthday

The Deutsche Fußball-Bund had organised a festive reception in his hometown Stuttgart for the occasion on Monday: Honorary President Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder celebrated his 75th birthday. Many top-class representatives from the world of sports and from the political and business ranks attended the event.

The reception was yet another opportunity to document and honour Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder’s outstanding achievements for Germany’s football, both in the national and international arena. “Throughout his life, he has been a firm advocate for solidarity in professionall football. His tireless efforts for a sustainable talent search have shaped the German Football Association as well as the Bundesliga”, said DFB-President Dr. Theo Zwanziger. “We’ll always be thankful for his contributions to the 2006 FIFA World Cup, both before and during the tournament, and also for his unwavering dedication to get the 2011 World Cup to Germany.”

“MV” was voted as ninth President in the history of the DFB during the General Assembly in Magdeburg on April 28, 2001. He had headed the league committee since 1986, giving the interests of professional football a clear and well-heard voice within the DFB, but never forgetting the mutual dependance between pro and amateur game. The years between 2004 and 2006 will be remembered as a period of two DFB-Presidents – Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder and Dr. Theo Zwanziger. During the General Assembly in Mainz, he was designated as Honorary President.

Internationally, Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder is among the most respected and most popular representatives of German football. He has been voted to the Executive Committee of both FIFA and UEFA, something no other DFB-representative had accomplished before him. Much acclaim was given to his wholehearted commitment for the development of the newly founded Eastern European football associations. In 2007, Gerhard Mayer Vorfelder had been appointed as Vice-President of UEFA and had been given the status of an honorary FIFA member.
