Geis leads Schalke out of their crisis

Schalke faced Hannover in the Veltins Arena in this week’s Friday night fixture. The game began slowly, but the home team gradually asserted their dominance and created many chances in the opening half. It was a masterclass from Schalke, but Hannover held tight at the back, and in some cases, rode their luck as the likes of Meyer and Sané barraged them with wave of attack after wave of attack. They were, however, unable to capitalise on any of these opportunities, and went into the half-time break with the scores at 0-0.

The second half proved far more exciting, producing four goals. It took the home team just six minutes to take the lead. Huntelaar was played the ball on the edge of the box, but pulled over by Marcelo as he tried to get the better of the striker. Johannes Geis stepped up to the spot and converted confidently, putting the ball out of the goalkeeper’s reach.

Good spell for Hannover

After the goal, the Reds came into the game a bit more. Substitute Saint-Maximin had an impact on proceedings as he and Karaman led from the front, creating promising attacks. This did not count for much, however, as in the 73rd minute, Huntelaar volleyed the ball home from just outside the six yard box, putting the home side 2-0 up.

Goal rush

Hannover fought back again, and this time Saint-Maximin proved effective as he cut in from the wing and produced a very powerful shot which Fährmann can’t have been expecting after 81 minutes. It was looking up for the away side, but within 60 seconds, any dreams they may have had were gone as Sané ran down the line, crossed and after a bit of ping-pong in the area, Di Santo got his head to the ball and put it beyond Zieler. Schalke were home and dry. The win for Schalke puts them up to fourth for the time being, while Hannover are still stuck in 14th.
