De Blasis strikes early

Both teams started the encounter brightly, but it was Mainz who took the early lead, with a brilliantly worked goal. Daniel Brosinski’s chipped ball was laid into the path of Gaetan Bussmann. His first time cross from the left found Pablo De Blasis, who poked the ball home after five minutes.

Darmstadt tried to find an equaliser against the Europa League participants, but at the same time left a lot of space for the Mainz forwards. The visitors best chance came through Laszlo Kleinheisler’s shot from 25 yards out, which hit the crossbar (18’). Mainz, however, were quick on the break and nearly added a second when Jhon Cordoba round Esser in the Darmstadt goal, but his shot hit the side-netting from a tight angle (20’).

Visitors miss a penalty

Mainz had many chances to get a second goal through Yunus Malli (26’) and an Alexander Hack header (28’). In the 35th minute, Cordoba then hit the crossbar with a glancing header from Malli’s cross.

Darmstadt were then awarded a penalty on the stroke of half-time, after Stefan Bell brought Antonio Colak in an aerial duell. Colak stepped up himself, but his weak shot was well saved by Lössl.

Malli extends Mainz lead

Darmstadt started the second-half brightly and looked to take the initiative. However, they failed to create any clear cut chances. Mainz then made it 2-0 with their first chance of the second-half. Yunus Malli produced some neat footwork in the visitors’ penalty area, before being brought down by Aytac Sulu. The Turkey international stepped up himself, sending Esser the wrong way (57’).

Darmstadt had a great chance to equalise in the 68th minute, when a rash Giulio Donati backpass fell into the path of Sven Schipplock. He found Colak in the middle, but he couldn’t put the chance away.

Even in the final stages of the game, Mainz remained susceptible to conceding, but the visitors couldn’t make the most of their chances. Referee Brych then awarded a third penalty of the game in injury time, when Mainz defender Niko Bungert handled in the penalty area. Gondorf then put the ball in the left-hand corner, but it was too little, too late as the game ended soon afterwards.
