Former German international Badstuber heads to VfB Stuttgart

VFB STUTTGART: The former German international Holger Badstuber is moving to VfB Stuttgart. Negotiations have been taking place for several days but the team, who have just been promoted to the Bundesliga, and the 28-year-old centre back have now reached an agreement for a one-year contract. The defender, who was born in the Allgäu region, close to Stuttgart, played for the Schwaben in his youth from 2000 to 2002.

“No one should forget their roots and I never have. VfB always has been a special club for me and still is, and they’ve grabbed my emotions again”, said Badstuber.

VfB have just parted ways with their sporting director Jan Schindelmeiser. The 2016-17 2. Bundesliga winners’ board of directors announced that they had decided to end their cooperation on 30th September 2017 “after intense discussions.” According to the club, Schindelmeiser was relieved of his duties on Friday.

“We regret having to take this step,” announced the executive board president Wolfgang Dietrich; however, he and his colleagues claim they had not been convinced “that our goals and agreements were reachable with the previous staff set-up.” VfB Stuttgart say that it is “our absolute duty” to only make decisions in the interests of the club.

Schindelmeiser arrived on 8th July 2016 as the successor of Robin Dutt, VfB’s previous sporting director.

BORUSSIA MÖNCHENGLADBACH: Borussia Mönchengladbach have lost their last pre-season friendly before the start of the season. The team, who hail from from the Niederrhein region, were beaten 1-2 by Leicester City (0-0) a week before their DFB-Pokal first round game against Regionalliga side Rot-Weiss Essen.

Thorgan Hazard (46’) fired Borussia into the lead but goalscorer Jamie Vardy (67’, 74’) turned the game in favour of the 2016 English Premier League champions, for whom ex-German-international Robert Huth is unable to play due to a an ankle injury, just one week before the start of the Premier League.

A few minutes after being substituted on, Gladbach midfielder Tobias Strobl had to return to the bench after a blow to the neck.
