First U21s call-up for Dahoud - Sané back in the squad

Horst Hrubesch has named his U21s squad for the first internationals of the year against the Faroe Islands at the Frankfurter-Volksbank-Stadion on 24th March (20:00 CET) and Russia in Rostov-on-Don on 29th March (19:00 CEST).

There’s a first U21s call-up for Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Mahmoud Dahoud. The 20-year-old has featured for the U20s so far this season. “Mahmoud is having a fantastic season and obviously we’ve been in close contact with Frank Wormuth,” said Horst Hrubesch. “Him being called up to the U21s is a logical step,” explained the 64-year-old head coach.

After their respective injuries at the end of last year, Niklas Stark of Hertha Berlin and Lukas Klostermann of RB Leipzig are both back in the team. With Jonathan Tah is part of Joachim Löw’s senior squad instead, Leroy Sané rejoins the U21s for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers. “It’s a clear sign of how closely our national teams work together,” said Hrubesch. “The players’ development always takes the highest priority. We’re always in close communication with the clubs, as well as Hansi Flick and Joachim Löw.”

Hrubesch is expecting his players to be fully focused going into the match against the Faroe Islands and Russia. “We want to stay top of the table and continue our winning run. The Russia game in particular will demand everything of us.”
