First training session ahead of World Cup

Having finally arrived in South Korea, the Germany U20 national team trained today at 07:00 CEST (14:00 local time) in Daejeon under the watch of head coach Guido Streichsbier. After a tricky time selecting the squad and different players travelling at different times, the team was finally able to focus on their preparations for their first match at the World Cup.

Things became a little difficult when it came to choosing the squad for the tournament due to the number of games still to be played in Germany’s professional leagues and those players still required at their respective clubs. The journey to South Korea was organised in two groups, with players either travelling on Saturday or Sunday. Guido Streichsbier himself flew out on Monday evening to wait for the final matchdays to be over and react to any personnel decisions if necessary.

Squad not yet complete

Both Maximilian Mittelstädt (Hertha BSC Berlin) and Suat Serdar (FSV Mainz 05) joined the squad earlier than expected on Monday after their clubs allowed them to take early leave. However there are still some players who are yet to join up with the rest of the team. Benedikt Gimber (Karlsruher SC) has had to delay his departure due to a head injury that he picked up in a clash with Dresden’s Stefan Kutschke and will arrive in Korea on Wednesday. Jordan Torunarigha (Hertha BSC) and Emmanuel Iyoha (Fortuna Düsseldorf) will remain with their clubs until after the final Bundesliga matchday. Jannes Horn (VfL Wolfsburg) and Florian Neuhaus (1860 München) will hopefully not have to contest the relegation play-off and will therefore also travel after the last matchday.

Despite having these different timings to juggle, Guido Streichsbier is still fully-focused on the tournament and is hoping that the team will find their rhythm quickly. The team has been working on the finer details of their game throughout the year. “The boys are well-versed in everything we have been working on with them,” said Streichsbier. “They know how we want to play and have a good team spirit. The aim of the next few training sessions will be to bring the players from different leagues and clubs up to speed.”

Kick off World Cup campaign against Venezuela

The facilities provided for the squad could not be better. The training pitch is close to the hotel and the 40,000 seat stadium was used in the 2002 World Cup.

The boys were given a chance to look around the surrounding area on Tuesday. After a virtual golf tournament by the hotel, they went into the town centre. The reasons for this chance to relax are twofold. “On the one hand it gives the boys a chance to see a bit of the city and the country,” explained Guido Streichsbier. “The other important thing is to keep them busy so that they can acclimatise and adjust to the time difference.”

The team will have to make sure they have settled in by Saturday, when they take on Venezuela to kick off their World Cup campaign.
